What is the training of naturopathic doctors?
Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) must complete a bachelor’s degree, followed by a 4-year post-graduate program at an accredited naturopathic medical school. The Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto provides an intensive program which includes more than 1200 hours of clinical experience and more than 3000 hours of classroom training. The program covers biomedical sciences, clinical sciences, and naturopathic therapeutics. Students must also write and pass two sets of licensing exams offered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) in order to be licensed.
What does the initial consultation look like?
Your initial consultation is ninety minutes in length, and will primarily be used as an information gathering session. Your ND will take a thorough case history, asking questions about all body systems, your daily life, your health history, and family medical history. Complaint based physical exams will also be performed. The initial consultation is an opportunity to share any relevant information with your ND, and for them to hear your story and learn about what makes you unique.
Can I still see my Medical Doctor and a naturopath?
Yes! NDs can function as primary care physicians, though collaborative care can be beneficial as well. All your healthcare practitioners have your best interest at heart and work together in order to provide you with the highest quality care. Is Naturopathic Medicine scientific?
Naturopathic medicine can be described as science-based, natural medicine. There are numerous scientific studies published that validate the efficacy and use of many of the nutraceuticals and other treatments used. Naturopathic Doctors take into account both scientific and traditional methods of medicine to provide the highest quality, individualized care to their patients.
Are services covered by OHIP/Insurance?
Visits with your Naturopath are not covered by OHIP but are covered by most insurance plans.
What conditions can NDs treat?
NDs can treat a variety of conditions, ranging from digestive concerns and hormonal health to chronic migraines and sleep disorders. We are best at the treatment and continued care of both acute and chronic conditions, with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention.
Do I need a referral to see a Naturopathic Doctor?
You do not need a referral to come see an ND! We operate independently from the government-run health care systems and therefore you are able to book an appointment without any referrals or paperwork from your family doctor.
